LOCATION

Northern Cape, South Africa

THE CHALLENGE

During construction of precast concrete wind turbine towers, concerns were raised regarding the quality of the grouted joints between tower segments, with the possibility of voids that could could compromise long-term structural performance.

OUR APPROACH

Medicrete was appointed to conduct a condition assessment of the grouted joints. A comprehensive visual inspection and Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity (UPV) assessment were undertaken to evaluate the integrity and quality of the grout within the joints.

OUTCOME

The investigation confirmed the condition of the grouted connections and provided independent quality verification. Recommendations for the remedial actions where required were provided, ensuring confidence in the structural integrity of the completed towers.

Underground Mining Infrastructure Assessment

INDUSTRY

Mining

LOCATION

Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)

THE CHALLENGE

Concerns were raised regarding cracking, concrete quality and long-term durability of critical underground infrastructure including silo bunkers and equipment bases that are essential for safe and reliable mining operations.

OUR APPROACH

Medicrete undertook a comprehensive investigation using visual inspections, UPV, GPR, concrete coring and structural assessments to determine the true condition and root cause of the reported concerns.

KEY FINDINGS

While initial assumptions pointed to poor concrete quality, the investigation confirmed that the concrete generally met the required performance criteria. The observed deterioration was primarily related to operational and service-related factors.

OUR SOLUTION

Medicrete provided practical repair methodologies, structural strengthening recommendations and EN 1504 – compliant repair specifications to ensure the long-term durability and safe operation of the underground infrastructure.

Mining Silo Condition Assessment & Reinforcement Mapping

INDUSTRY

Mining

LOCATION

Mpumalanga, South Africa

THE CHALLENGE

Medicrete was appointed to undertake a condition assessment of reinforced concrete silo as part of a structural engineering evaluation for planned rehabilitation works. The objective was to determine the condition of the concrete and accurately identify the reinforcement layout to provide reliable information for the structural design process.

OUR APPROACH

A comprehensive investigation was carried out using visual inspections, Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity (UPV) and concrete coring to assess the integrity of the structure and verify reinforcement placement.

KEY FINDINGS

The finding provided the structural design engineer with accurate information regarding the condition of the concrete and the reinforcement arrangement, enabling informed design calculations and reducing uncertainty during the rehabilitation planning phase.

OUR SOLUTION

Medicrete delivered detailed reinforcement mapping and independent quality verification to support the proposed engineering solution.

Wastewater Treatment Plant Condition Assessment & Repair Design

INDUSTRY

Water Infrastructure

LOCATION

Gauteng, South Africa

THE CHALLENGE

Concerns were raised regarding cracking, concrete deterioration and reinforcement corrosion in key structures within an operational wastewater treatment plant.

OUR APPROACH

A comprehensive investigation was conducted using visual inspections, UPV, GPR, concrete coring, rebound hammer testing, cover surveys, carbonation depth measurements and chloride analysis to assess the condition and durability of the concrete.

KEY FINDINGS

The investigation identified poor workmanship and reinforcement corrosion as the primary causes of concrete delamination and spalling.

OUR SOLUTION

Medicrete developed an EN 1504-compliant repair methodology, indluding structural strengthening recommendations, repair specifications and an asset condition report to support the rehabilitation programme and extend the service life of the assets.

High-Temperature Concrete Sump Assessment & Repair Design

INDUSTRY

Power Generation

LOCATION

Limpopo, South Africa

THE CHALLENGE

Concerns were raised regarding cracking, concrete deterioration and reinforcement corrosion in a reinforced concrete sump operating in extreme heat conditions withing a power station.

OUR APPROACH

A comprehensive investigation was conducted using visual inspections, UPV, GPR, concrete coring, rebound hammer testing, cover surveys, half-cell potential mapping, resistivity measurements, carbonation depth and chloride analysis as well as structural assessment.

KEY FINDINGS

The primary deterioration mechanism was thermal distress caused by repeated exposure to elevated operating temperatures. This resulted in concrete delamination, microcracking and localised cover loss. Reinforcement corrosion risk was to low to moderate.

OUR SOLUTION

Medicrete developed an EN 1504-compliant repair methodology and high-temperature capable repair specification designed to withstand the operational heat within the sump, along with a remedial design, asset condition report and quality verification plan.

Coastal Concrete Promenade Condition Assessment

INDUSTRY

Marine Infrastructure

LOCATION

Western Cape, South Africa

THE CHALLENGE

Concerns were raised regarding concrete deterioration, reinforcement corrosion and long-term durability of a coastal promenade exposed to harsh marine environment

OUR APPROACH

A comprehensive investigation was conducted using visual inspections, UPV, GPR, concrete coring, concrete resistivity measurements, carbonation testing and chloride analysis. Reinforcement mapping was undertaken to verify reinforcement layout and cover depth while identifying the primary causes of concrete spalling.

KEY FINDINGS

Reinforcement corrosion driven by chloride ingress and carbonation was identified as the primary cause of concrete spalling and surface deterioration. Variable cover depths and localised deterioration contributed to accelerated corrosion in exposed reinforcement.

OUR SOLUTION

A detailed asset condition report was delivered, including reinforcement mapping, deterioration assessment and practical recommendations to support future maintenance and rehabilitation planning. Independent quality verification provides confidence in decision-making and optimises asset lifecycle management.

Bridge Condition Assessment & Structural Strengthening Support

INDUSTRY

Road Infrastructure

LOCATION

Gauteng, South Africa

THE CHALLENGE

Concerns were raised regarding severe cracking, reinforcement corrosion and the long-term structural performance of reinforced concrete bridge.

OUR APPROACH

A comprehensive investigation was conducted using visual inspections, UPV, GPR, concrete coring, rebound hammer testing and structural engineering assessments. Reinforcement mapping was undertaken to verify reinforcement layout and cover depth.

KEY FINDINGS

Significant cracking was identified in key structural elements. Rebar mapping confirmed reinforcement layout and cover depths, providing essential data for engineers to design appropriate strengthening methods.
