In the demanding environment of coal processing, structural reliability is not optional.
Recently, our team collaborated with a major mining client, the appointed engineers, and the main contractor to design and deliver a customised strengthening solution for a critical silo at a coal processing plant.
The project began with an extensive engineering review of multiple reinforcement options. After careful analysis, it was agreed that the most effective approach would be to strengthen the silo by installing reinforced concrete rings around its full circumference. This solution would provide both confinement and additional flexural capacity, ensuring the silo could continue to meet operational demands while extending its service life under harsh mining conditions.
Precision Strengthening Method
The chosen method required accuracy and meticulous execution. Y12 high-yield dowels were installed around the silo’s perimeter and bonded with a high-performance structural epoxy adhesive. These dowels acted as the reinforcement interface for the concrete bands that would encapsulate and reinforce the existing structure. The result was a strengthened silo with enhanced durability and structural performance.
Quality Control at Every Stage
One of the most important factors in the project’s success was the implementation of a robust quality control framework. All works were carried out in full compliance with EN 1504, the European Standard for the repair of concrete structures, and applicable SANS specifications.
Our scope included developing and overseeing:
- Comprehensive quality control plans
- Detailed method statements
- Inspection and witness point checklists
These documents were tailored to the engineering design and fully integrated into the contractor’s site execution strategy, ensuring that every stage of the project was traceable, repeatable, and verifiable.
Surface preparation was another critical component. The existing concrete was prepared to the specified profile and cleanliness to achieve optimal bonding of both the epoxy and the new concrete layers. Once strengthening was complete, a waterproofing membrane system was applied over the reinforced zones to limit water ingress and reduce the risk of future reinforcement corrosion. This is especially important in coal processing environments where moisture and chemical exposure are unavoidable.
Throughout the project, our focus remained on meeting technical design requirements while upholding the highest standards of workmanship. By integrating modern strengthening techniques with practical site execution, we delivered a safe, durable, and standards-compliant solution that met the client’s needs and preserved the silo’s operational reliability.
